Thanks for following. I don't get to post as much as I wish I could. I really like your blog too by the way. I've got it on my RSS feed. And yes, I have had those times where God keeps saying something over and over again. It's amazing how quickly forget what he's repeating to us. But thankfully he's patient and he reminds us of it again and again. Thank God for His grace!

Re: Hearing God’s Voice (Part 1)

Hey Trev, You just mentioned in the meeting to check out your website, and I usually do when I see that you've posted something new, but I hadn't read this post yet. Wow. I think it's a valuable writing. But I find it to be false advertising for many. I hope readers open the book before purchasing, or else they will get a surprise. I enjoy many books from Thomas Nelson, but since joining the Booksneeze review group, I've quickly learned that the books they publish are very opportunistic. But perhaps we should expect nothing else when shareholders are involved. Thanks for your comments Jonathon.

Re: Review: “Max on Life” by Max Lucado

That's what I thought as well: Good for a reference book. This gives us plenty more to think about.

I agree with you that there is more to making a relationship work than simply faith. However, I would push, and you touch on this, that if you have the same faith, you should profess the same values. If this isn't the case, this becomes a matter of interpretation which can still lead to a happy compromise. Whereas a couple not working from the same textbook, in the Bible, does not have the same fighting chance of finding common ground.

Ultimately, the common ground for Christians, is Jesus. So that even if their values are slightly different, their faith and trust in Him leads them in the right direction, even when they don't agree on a particular matter.

Yes, deeper issues such as money and the like can be pinpointed as causes of divorce. But I would say that money IS a faith issue, as your view of stewardship, whether from Scripture or not, will definitely dictate the way a couple uses their money. And if they're poor stewards, yes, divorce perhaps is more likely. If they put faith first in every issue, including money, and they know this from before marriage, the issue should answer itself, and each person can decide for themselves whether the other member is marriage material.

I would agree that God's presence doesn't "life off" a believer when they marry a person outside the faith. But at the same time, I can't say God's favour rests on the relationship either. Show me Scripture speaking as such. It goes beyond a "non-blessing" or "unnecessary suffering" to being that God has called His people to SO much more than, dare I say, settling for someone outside the faith.

Thoughts? Thanks Pat.

Re: Unequally yoked: Yes! It is a big deal!

Great post, Trevor! In my humble experience, and feel free to disagree, but I have found that people are more open to view the power of equal yoking if you don't approach it from the faith issue. I've found the yoking is about so much more. It's about all core values and culture, and the one that causes divorce more often is, surprisingly, not faith. It's money. When I talk to young couples who want to get married I have them list all the core values that they share, visualizing them as rungs in their ladder. If you consider how a Muslim would answer these questions and how an Christian would answer them, you see clearly how few rungs there are to solidify the relationship. How do you value relationships with your parents? Will your parents live with you? Can our parents intervene freely in your decisions about anything? Will you spank the kids? Can your parents spank your kids? Do we ever hit each other? Do we save or spend? Stay-at-home mom or stay-at-home dad? Open gifts on Christmas Eve or Christmas Day? Celebrate Christmas at all? Deep fry or oven-baked? The more rungs, the more solid their ladder will be. Ultimately, those who share the same faith often have similar core values, but NOT ALWAYS. I don't think God's presence lifts off a believer if they marry someone outside their faith, nor do I believe God is displeased with them, but I do believe they will struggle with the natural chain of consequences, the 'non blessing' and arguing that comes with all the differences. That is what displeases God; the unnecessary suffering.

Re: Importance of TheologicalEducation:Jus

Hey Chris! How are you!? Long time! Thanks for the comments.

I would agree with you in that we should not so easily allow someone who is
clearly Spirit-filled but without education to fall by the way-side when it
comes to church leadership. In fact, I was privileged to be a part of a
church here in Toronto who hired from within their congregation so as to
have a better representation in their staffing of the community they are
serving. And they had two members who did not have any formal diploma or
degree.

One line I would draw however would be in the amount of teaching this person
gave to the local church as a whole. I would not be comfortable with them
preaching from the pulpit every Sunday. Having lived in Kenya, I befriended
so many pastors, even the pastors I went to class with, who had endless
variations on their interpretation of Scripture, most of which was very
incorrect and unbiblical. And they were in charge of a church or in some
cases they were Bishops overseeing many churches in a region. Sadly they are
passing along poor theology to their followers which in the end can be a
detriment to God's purposes.

All that to say, I don't think theological training is pertinent for a
leader, depending on the type of leadership they are providing to the local
church. If teaching is a primary role, just as a high school teacher goes
through their 5 years (usually) of training to get to that opportunity, why
should we not hold teaching pastors to the same, if not higher, standard as
representatives of God?

Peace, Chris. Miss you guys a lot!

Re: Importance of TheologicalEducation:Jus

Trev, how are you? This is Chris Raben. I saw this link on Robyn's facebook page and I happened to see this brief article on theological education.

I would think that there is no right or wrong answer here, except to be led by the Spirit; either to go to Bible college if that is what the Spirit says, or dont go if that what the Spirit says.

However, in response to your question, I do not think that one needs a theological degree to be in full-time ministry. To be in a full-time ministy one needs to be called and gifted by God; pursuing a degree will get you neither. God's anointing must rest upon the person. I am convinced that there is tremendous benefit in finding a Holy Spirit led person to mentor for the new and mature Christian, in the form of discipling. We need people who chase after God to be in full-time ministry, and not the focus on whether they have a degree or not. I would rather listen for 5 minutes to the person who sat at the feet of God, than listen for 5 hrs to the person who had 5 years of experience studying the Bible.

I do believe that many blessing and benefits are not received because the doors are closed on anointed people just because they do not have a degree.

God bless,
Chris
ttcraben@hotmail.com

Re: Unequally yoked: Is it really a big deal?

Think of this scenario:

A parent may warn their children about the dangers of bad company and try to protect to even stop them from mingling with those they see as bad company. It is still the child's choice to make as to whether or not they'll heed to the words of advice from their parents.
In some cases the parents may be right in this regard and in others they may be wrong.
It's in hind-sight or submission to God in the moment that we determine which case that my be.
Our earthly relationships with parents or those in authority sometimes may affect our view of who God truly is.
You see our parents and leaders though they may love us in the best way they know how... they are not God and they don't know all and they are not perfect (heart -breaking as that is to know, it's reality)>
They are trying just as each one of us who has been saved by grace to do what God has called us to.
We are all on a journey in which we are seeking to bring Glory to God the Father!

There is no gray area in what the Scripture is saying; it is simply do not be unequally yoked.
As a believer and follower of Jesus Christ we give the Word of God the authority over our lives.
We may not always be in agreement with it because we don't understand the reason for the command. Often we may look at what everyone else is doing because there may be people who may have been unequally yoked and there lives seem picture perfect.
The reality remains that we are all of a sinful nature and our ideas the greatest of them often times are very foolish in the eyes of God.

God is Perfect and he know the secret motives of the heart.
What he commands is good and pure and true!
He does not want to harm us but he has provided a way for us and it is in choosing His way and as we live it we experience in a new way the goodness of the purest Love and real freedom.

Re: Unequally yoked: Is it really a big deal?

I agree, Marcy. The argument I usually hear from that suggestion is that the person may be Catholic or believes in God, but doesn't seem real committed to God or church. And so the strand of hope they hold up is for the person to suddenly be passionate for God. Or maybe the person is just willing to go to church with them. All of which is very wishful thinking. But I guess the "love" blinds. Have you ever dealt with this at New Life?

Re: Unequally yoked: Is it really a big deal?

If as a Christian, Jesus is the most important part of your life, why would u even want to make a committment to someone who doesn't even believe in him?
